ABOUT THE EXHIBITION

Sidney Nolan’s 1946-47 paintings on the 19th-century Victorian bushranger Ned Kelly, with his starkly simplified depiction of Kelly in his homemade armour, have become iconic Australian images.

Nolan painted many different images of this country. In this series, the paintings take us through the main events of the Ned Kelly story: from early encounters with police in pursuit of Kelly and his gang, to the shooting at Stringybark Creek through to the siege at Glenrowan, ending with the trial at which Kelly was sentenced to hang in 1880. Nolan was captivated by the mythic implications of the story and wanted to go beyond a literal approach. Interwoven with the story are the artist’s meditations on the universal themes of violence, injustice, love and betrayal. For Nolan, the Kelly saga was also a way to paint the Australian landscape and he believed that it was ‘a story arising out of the bush and ending in the bush’.

The series was painted while Nolan was living with Sunday and John Reed at their semi-rural home, ‘Heide’, in present-day Bulleen, Melbourne. In 1977, Sunday Reed generously donated 25 of the 26 works on display to the National Gallery of Australia.
