In the first part of this workshop you’ll be guided through how to design and style product images that communicate what your brand is all a

We’ll discuss:

  • The different styles of content you can create
  • Creating a moodboard and planning your shoot
  • Styling with light and colour
  • Selecting and using props
  • Set design
  • Composing your photographs

You’ll have the opportunity to explore some free apps & software that help you plan your photoshoot. In the second part of this workshop you’ll be guided through how to use your smartphone to photograph and edit your own product photos.

We’ll discuss:

  • The equipment you will use (and DIY alternatives)
  • How to work with light (both natural and artificial)
  • I’ll walk you through how to use your smartphone and photography apps to shoot your images
  • You’ll have the opportunity to experiment with some pre-set backdrops and a selection of props and try your hand at styling your images
  • You’ll also practice using phone apps to take some images of your product.
  • Then we’ll go through a basic editing workflow using your smartphone.

This workshop is best suited for makers who create small to medium size products including: small decor such as candles and ceramics, beauty products, baby and kids products, jewellery, accessories, stationary / illustrations and food products.

Please bring 2 – 3 of your products on the day. You will get the chance to take some photographs during the workshop.

Please note:

  • I will be using an iPhone 13 as the demonstration phone in this course. If you have a different model of iPhone you may experience some slight differences in performance of your phone or the layout of where to find certain tools.
  • To get the most out of this workshop I would recommend that you have at least an iPhone 7 plus or more recent.
  • If you have an android phone you can elect to undertake the workshop. But please be aware that the function and layout of your phone may be different.
  • I’ll primarily be using the inbuilt camera app on the phone. But from time to time I will also be using the Lightroom App – particularly when discussing editing.
  • The lightroom app is free to download and available on both android and iphone, however some tools require a paid subscription. I suggest you download the free Lightroom app prior to the workshop.

Meet your host – Clive Venning

Clive has over 25 years experience with running his own two small businesses, which were built by him from the ground up and continue to operate today. The first company, deals with digital printing and direct marketing including online applications in the form of CRM’s, and the second company is an online international telegram business.

Meet your presenter – Rachel Kimberley

Rachel Kimberley is an editorial and commercial photographer, specialising in artistic product photography with a modern, design focused style. Rachel holds a degree in Filmmaking and is focused on creating imagery that tells a story about the brands and the people behind them.

This is an in-person workshop. This workshop is aimed at small businesses throughout NSW, and has a capacity to host up to 20 people. This workshop is for business owners who have just started a business or have an established business.

This workshop will take place face-to-face. You must be registered with the Business Connect program. Business Connect is a dedicated and personalised NSW Government program that provides trusted advice to help you start, run, adapt or grow your small business.
