MEGAN COCHRAN : Earth and Human 

Debut solo exhibition 

Earth + Human’ explores what it means to not just observe nature, but to engage and create from a place of intimate relationship with nature. Just like any relationship, by spending time immersed within the local bio-region, there is a deepening of knowledge that takes place along with a transformation of human dignity and a reminder of the dormant parts within us. Cochran explores what it means to be a part of the ecology and seeks to learn the language of natural forms, objects, rhythms, foraging, and seasonal changes over time. Embracing curiosity as her guide, Cochran experiments with wilderness technology and using natural elements as an extension of the body to create and celebrate. Cochran believes that to reverse our tendency to destroy what we don’t understand, humanity must truly engage with nature and develop personal wonder and delight. Change starts with our own experience and heart.

Cochran is an artist living in the coastal wilderness of the Bundjalung nation (Pottsville, NSW), with a background in architecture. Her architectural profession has led her to develop a unique abstract and impressionist style expressing complex themes and a comprehensive understanding of space within the art and the space the art inhabits. Cochran draws much inspiration from the natural environment and her style is fluid, textural and often portrays the dreamy and gentle rambling of nature through a neutral palette and experimental mark making. Through the process of exploring the deep yet often overlooked themes of life, Cochran’s art evokes a sense of wonder, curiosity and reflection. Her work has also been described as healing as she seeks to capture moments in time and respond to societal hurts, issues and curiosities with an attitude of hope.
