Few people around the world have not heard about the beautiful island of Bali. Those lucky enough to visit or live there often recount their experiences with exuberance and satisfaction, yet almost always with a mention of the civic issues that have resulted from its popularity. The lure of international money is driving business at all levels. From the street hawkers, to significant global companies, the ‘always open for business’ sign is out! With this unstoppable and accelerating commerce sadly comes, inevitable repercussions and these become most evident in the form of waste product pollution and the degradation of social culture. The beneficiary of unparalleled natural beauty, the ‘Island of the Gods’ could easily, without concerted effort, become an unsanitary playground for fools.
