Madrigal : group exhibition
Details
Kath Egan, Helle Jorgensen, Judy Oakenfull, Amelia Reid & Belinda Smith
Madrigal brings together five female artists from the Tweed, exhibiting artwork in fibre, ceramics, sculpture and painting.
A madrigal is a song performed a cappella where several singers sing different notes at the same time to create a lyrical whole. This poetic style of music often uses word painting, a musical technique based on storytelling that layers the melody and tonality to the lyrics.
For the last year Amelia, Belinda, Helle, Judy and Kath have met to talk about their art practices, the art world, philosophy, ideas and life in general. The meetings provide friendship, solidarity, encouragement, and support and help to better navigate the challenging and often solitary work of a practicing artist living in a regional area.
This exhibition, from the artists’ separate catalogues, is a representation of their voices uniting as a whole. The idea of a madrigal reflects the weaving of ideas through conversations and discussions over many months and is the first step towards potential further collaborations.
Join the artists at a casual opening reception on Sunday, 4th June, 3pm – 5pm at Small Works Gallery, 10 Commercial Rd, Murwillumbah.
