Join the Tweed Valley Clinical Society for dinner and a localised discussion on osteoporosis

The Australian Institute of Health and Welfare estimates that a million Australians have osteoporosis, yet it remains under diagnosed. Thirty percent of women and ten percent of men over the age of seventy-five suffer from this potentially life changing disease putting them at increased risk of fractures. Around fifty percent of elderly with a hip fracture will not return to their previous level of independence.

You are invited a Healthy North Coast Clinical Society meeting around the topic of osteoporosis, its importance in our community, the prevalence and medical and non-medical management options.

You’ll hear a presentation from Port Macquarie Endocrinologist, Dr Kate Gupta before a facilitated discussion of a case study with a panel of local health professionals.

Learning Objectives

  • Understand and identify the vulnerable populations in our community
  • Understand the role bone mineral testing and the T score in diagnosis of osteopaenia and osteoporosis
  • Discuss the latest research in pharmacological management of those at risk Improve awareness of the pharmacological options available to manage osteoporosis, including the risks, benefits and monitoring requirements
  • Enhance understanding of the role of non-pharmacological management options.
  • Update your knowledge on the local referral pathways available in your area.

Health professionals involved in the care of people at risk of osteoporosis and fractures, including GPs, practice and RACH nurses, AMS workers, physiotherapists, exercise physiologists, dieticians, falls prevention officers would benefit from this update.
