Mum's the Word!

14 April, 2023

It’s no secret we all love our mums, but did you know the Tweed has a real soft spot for mothers too? There are so many ways to spoil, celebrate, surprise and enrich our beloved mums here in the Tweed and we thought you might want in on our top picks to wrap some love around your mum.

Think boutique shopping, soothing day spas and luscious morning teas or long alfresco lunches, smooth afternoon sips and all kinds of art-filled moments.

With so much goodness awaiting, you really could make every day Mother’s Day in the Tweed!

HIT THE SHOPS

Pick out the perfect gift for your mum or plan a lush day out for some boutique browsing and buying together. Our coast and country villages have it all, from homewares and hand-crafted pieces to vintage finds and must-have beach wear.

Make your way to Kingscliff and visit the wonderful Sorella, purveyors of all things fabulous in fashion, interiors and gifts.

Set aside ample time to shop your way around our hinterland villages, there’s a lot to cover! In the gorgeous Art Deco town of Murwillumbah, start at Each to Own for rainbow bursts of colour, with bright and beautiful wares from makers near and far. Be sure to feast your eyes on wall-to-wall gifting goodness at The Foundry Murwillumbah, just perfect for readers, dreamers, creators and mums needing to be spoilt!

Out in Tyalgum, pick out a one-off piece for mum at Enclume Jewellery, a silversmith artisan studio and gallery where gorgeous jewellery comes to life atop an antique French anvil. You’ll find antiques too in the beautiful town of Burringbar where Heath’s Old Wares stands ready with abundant vintage collectables.

TAKE A TOUR IN NATURE

If your mum is an outdoorsy kind of mum, why not give her the gift of time in the Tweed’s restorative natural spaces.

Book her in for a seasonal walking tour in the verdant acres of Tyalgum’s exquisite Garden of Light or share some zen time together with a stand-up paddle on Watersports Guru‘s Mindfulness in the Mangroves tour.

There are also river cruise tours to choose from, kayaking adventures, hikes to lookouts on high and surf lessons especially for ladies! Search more Tweed adventures here.

SOAK UP THE DAY IN SPA HEAVEN

Nothing says ‘I love you mum’ more than being treated to some day spa indulgence, right? For a luxe pamper treatment and wellness time worthy of your mum, check out the spa menu at these top picks and be sure to check yourself in too!

The relaxation at sublime Halcyon Spa, in Cabarita’s Halcyon House, starts the moment you walk in the door, with swoon-worthy interiors, soothing tunes and signature scents slowing time right down in readiness for a calming spa journey. Go all out and treat mum to their tempting Halcyon Spa & Paper Daisy Mother’s Day Lunch.

Also seaside is The Spa at Salt, onsite at Peppers Salt Resort, where therapeutic massage, renewing facials and lush body wraps await, once mum has sipped Aveda Tea in the Tranquillity Lounge of course.

SIP FROM SUN UP TO LAST LIGHT

Another way to lavish love on your mum is to treat her tastebuds! The Tweed is the place for sipping, supping, snacking and savouring and here are some starters for your mother-love menu.

Start the day at tantalising Cubby Bakehouse where rows and rows of flaky, caky and baked goodness are just waiting to be breakfast, brunch or morning tea. It’s a sweet spot that mum will adore. Food made and served with love is what Mavis’s Kitchen is all about and you can choose to relish breakfast, lunch or dinner at this elegant heritage Queenslander, surrounded by food gardens and sprawling green lawn.

What mum doesn’t like tea, cakes and bubbles topped with rose-flavoured fairy floss! For an elegant high tea experience (as well as a divine menu from breakfast through lunch) zip out to Flutterbies Cottage Cafe in vibrant Tyalgum, where old world charm and beautiful gardens will suitably impress.

If mum has a taste for seafood, you must book her in for a true Tweed treat! Set lakeside at Birds Bay, The Oyster Shed serves up farm-fresh oysters and wild-caught mud crabs, amongst other sea-plucked delights, with local gins and beers on ice and live music set to a sea breeze.

For a sumptuous sip to cheers your mum, be sure to book in at Husk Distillery in riverside Tumbulgum for a taste of the famous Ink Gin and a tour of the distillery that makes this savoured spirit, as well as Australia’s first agricole rum.

CREATIVITY LIVES HERE

Artistic endeavour runs deep in the Tweed, from artists and makers to galleries and studios, all ready to impress or instruct, and we’ve gathered a couple of creative musts for mothers and children of all ages!

First up, let’s roll up the sleeves and throw clay. The good folk at Stone Studio in Kingscliff run classes that range from Vases & Vino for the grown-ups to Mummy and Me for mothers and toddlers. Something for everyone!

You’ll also find art for all persuasions in our various gallery spaces, from the flagship Tweed Regional Gallery and Margaret Olley Art Centre to M|Arts Precinct with working artists and occasional workshops housed in an Art Deco warehouse. Smaller footprints but large-scale inspiration can also be found at ArtPost Uki, giving a space to stunning local artworks, and Mist Gallery in Cabarita, with rotating exhibitions that hero Tweed-based artists.
